Crew gains experience at Head of the Hooch

Ransom Everglades crew team competed in the 2017 Head of the Hooch Regatta in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Nov. 4-5, gaining valuable experience and accruing notable results in the largest and arguably most competitive youth field in the regatta’s history. The Raiders’ meet highlight: a top-25 finish by Andres Segrera '19 and Will Mathes '19 in Men’s Youth Doubles.
Summary from Director of Crew Program, Coach Tim McAllister: Saturday, Nov. 4, saw both the boys’ team and the girls’ team enter action in sweep (boys’ coxed fours) and sculling (boys’ and girls’ doubles). In the Men’s Youth Coxed Fours, the “A” boat of coxswain Valeria Vela '19, stroke Segrera, Jackson Bryan '20, Asher Lieberman  '20 and Mathes led off racing and placed 53rd out of 88 crews. The “B” boat of coxswain Nikki Jagid '19, stroke Aston Craft '20, Carter Freeland '19, Henry Schermerhorn '19 and Julien Bacon '20 raced to 76th place. Given that the team had spent less than a week in sweep boats this fall, this was a fine effort with both crews looking good and showing much promise to build on.

With the team’s emphasis on sculling over the fall, RE looked to pick up the pace in the sculling events and did so with the girls’ team competing next in the Women’s Youth Doubles. This event was stacked with many of the fastest high school scullers and programs in the nation and the “B” double of stroke Isa Ciocca and bow Ashley Nguyen '20 placed 59th out of 81 crews, with the “A” double of stroke Julia Buckner '20 and bow Anna Mistele '19 taking 71st place.

Then it was the boys turn next in the Men’s Youth Doubles. The “A” double of stroke Segrera and bow Mathes looked terrific in placing 25th out of 94 crews. In what was the effort of the weekend, the “B” double of stroke Lieberman and bow Bryan, while only placing 84th, did so with Lieberman rowing on a sliding seat with one broken wheel. (#REstrong!)

Continuing the theme of racing against some of the best crews in the country, the boys led off Sunday, Nov. 5, action in the Men’s Youth Quads in the first event of the day. The “A” boat of stroke Segrera, Mathes, Lieberman and Bryan raced well in a new lineup and placed 27th out of 63 crews. The “B” boat of stroke Craft, Freeland, Schermerhorn, and Bacon put in a fine effort to place 54th. The girls then closed out the regatta in the Women’s Youth Quads, with stroke Ciocca, Buckner, Mistele and Nguyen looking good and placing 45th out of 54 crews.

Congratulations to all RE rowers who went up against often much more experienced competitors from many long-established programs and came out the other side with fine results. Thank you to assistant coaches Paul Elkins and Caroline Escobar.
