Students raise homelessness awareness through art

RE students painted 50 tiny houses for a unique art installation designed to raise awareness of homelessness that will be on display at Brickell City Centre from Nov. 8-15. Ana Lucia Perla '18, Anna Bhatt '18, Sonja Lazovic '18 and Sophia Sokol '18 will represent Ransom Everglades School at the Nov. 8 public unveiling of the "Roofs Rising" installation, which was conceived by the Miami-Dade Homeless Trust.
The display includes 1,000 homes painted by students, community leaders, elected officials and activists; it is designed to call attention to the housing needs of the homeless in Miami as a kick off to Homeless Awareness Day on Nov. 9. It will reside on the first floor of the mall at 701 S. Miami Ave. and might be moved to another site after.

RE students painted the houses as an extra-curricular activity organized by the Ransom Everglades Art League (REAL), and under the direction of art teacher Astrid Dalins. The Homeless Trust connects landlords with tenants through its RentConnect program; the mini-homes will eventually become house-warming gifts to those who receive housing support through the trust.
