Good urges US students to avoid distracted driving

Jacy Good drew a standing ovation from the Upper School student body after sharing her painful story and powerful message about distracted driving during an emotional Dec. 5 assembly. She and her husband Steve Johnson return to the Lewis Family Auditorium at 7 p.m. tonight to speak to Ransom Everglades parents. Their goal: to end all cell phone use while driving.
Good’s parents were killed in car accident that left her permanently injured on her college graduation day nine years ago. A high school senior using his cell phone ran a red light, forcing an 18-wheeler into the path of their car. Her then-boyfriend Steve remained with her through months of rehabilitation, and the two now cross the nation sharing their story and urging people to put their phones away when driving.

“What happened to my family happens every single day,” Good said. “Everywhere there are roads, this is killing people.”

Good and Johnson were invited to campus by Eitan Dooreck-Aloni '18, who leads the RE club Students Against Distracted Driving. Dooreck-Aloni and Jake Berlin '18 introduced the couple at the student assembly.

The couple cited various studies that show people are four times more likely to crash when talking on their phones. One study showed there is 37 percent less activity in a driver’s brain when the driver is talking on a cell phone.

“There is no safe way to use a phone behind a wheel,” Johnson said. “It is the number one problem on roads around the world.”
