RE Middle School students escorted 130 local children through the school's annual "Toy Store" at Christ Episcopal Church in Coconut Grove on Dec. 9, helping each child select several items from the hundreds of toys, books, games and sporting equipment Middle School students, faculty and staff had donated.
The event took place a day after St. Alban's Day, when more than 500 local children enjoyed a winter festival on both of RE's campuses. RE faculty Ramona Miller, Maria Eugenia Abrante and Frances Alexander spearheaded this year's Toy Store, which opened for the first time more than 20 years ago under the direction of admissions officer Betty Park.
Students contributed new or gently used toys and other items, and about 20 assisted local children as they "shopped." The Toy Story Club and other campus organizations donated money from fundraisers for the purchase of bicycles and scooters. Middle School basketball players, faculty members and parents helped deliver the items to the church. Faculty member Fabiola Weinberg photographed the event.
"It's a great big group effort," Miller said. "Everybody contributed."
