Two Upper School RE thespians – Isa Pena ’19 and Andrew Lorenzen ’18 – earned best-in-the-district honors (Critics’ Choice) as RE students won nine “superior” awards at the District 8 Thespians IE Festival that concluded Dec. 16. Pena also was recognized as one of the state’s top high school thespian talents when she received an inaugural Charlie Cinnamon Theatre Scholarship from the Florida Theatrical Association at the conclusion of the competition.
Kenny Howard, the Education Director of the Florida Theatrical Association, announced Pena as the District 8 recipient of the scholarship, which provides six students statewide with $500 each toward summer education in theater. She also won the Critics’ Choice award in solo musical as Lorenzen claimed the same honor in playwriting.
RE students competed against thespian troupes from more than 40 Miami-Dade County schools at the two-part event, which took place on Dec. 2 at Miami Arts Studio at Zelda Glazer and Dec. 16 at Miami Beach High. The RE troupe was led by new performing arts teacher Sam Shapiro and teacher J.P Arrastia.
