US students educated on drug abuse prevention

Upper School students heard powerful stories about the consequences of drug and alcohol abuse from members of the Tina Dailey Foundation during a Feb. 6 assembly. The presentation, part of a body of health and safety programming at RE, was designed to arm students with the tools and information to make good decisions, and to urge them to look out for their friends.
Jill Paget Lowe, a member of the foundation's board of directors, introduced the program by sharing the story of her childhood friend Tina Dailey. Dailey, who grew up on Key Biscayne, suffered from an addiction to drugs and alcohol. She died of a drug overdose at 34.

Cindy Dodds, also of Key Biscayne, tearfully introduced the RE student body to her son Kyle, who developed an opioid addiction after taking painkillers for a football injury. Kyle died at 24 after consuming cocaine laced with deadly synthetic drugs. Students also heard from Eric Lang, the fire chief on Key Biscayne. Lang offered students tips to keep them – and their friends – from succumbing to substance abuse.
