Eight qualify for National Speech & Debate championships
Eight students from RE's speech and debate program qualified for the National Speech and Debate Association national championship during the first two qualifying events, with more students hoping to advance at the final qualifier March 10. Dori Schurr '20, Zoe San Martin '20, Isa Cofresi '19, Megan Houchin '19, Olivia Byrd '20, Joan Joseph '21, Ilija Wan-Simm '19 and Alex Dray '21 have qualified so far.
Five RE students were named first alternates.
The speech and debate team was also honored with the Leading Chapter Award and Sweepstakes Award during the Feb. 23-24 competitions, which made up the first two-thirds of the 2018 South Florida District Tournament. An event at Belen Jesuit Preparatory School determined qualifiers in Congress; an event at G. Holmes Braddock High School advanced qualifiers in Speech. The final event in Debate takes place at Miami Beach Senior High.
A week later, team members performed well at the Florida Forensic League Varsity State Tournament as the team's coach, faculty member Kate Hamm, was recognized as Coach of the Year of the Art Deco Region, receiving an award for her dedication to the program. Wan-Simm made it to semifinals in Dramatic Interpretation; Marley Rywell ‘19 and Brianna Kerr ‘19 as well as Oliver Stern ‘19 and Schurr made it to octofinals in Public Forum Debate. Stern was the fourth-best speaker in the event, while Schurr placed sixth.
