Debate students advance to nationals

Five RE students qualified for the National Speech and Debate Association national championships in debate during a recent competition. Oliver Stern '19 and Dori Schurr '20, and Alexander Abinader '19 and Thomas Murphy '19 qualified in Public Forum Debate; Cornelia Ehlebracht '20 qualified in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. The team also won the District Sweepstakes Award for qualifying the most members out of any school in the district.
Eight students previously qualified for the national championship during two events in February: Dori Schurr '20, Zoe San Martin '20, Isa Cofresi '19, Megan Houchin '19, Olivia Byrd '20, Joan Joseph '21, Ilija Wan-Simm '19 and Alex Dray '21.

At another event, novice Danny Jackson '21 qualified in Dramatic Interpretation to the Catholic Forensic League Grand Finals in Washington D.C. The speech and debate team is led by faculty member Kate Hamm.
