Standing ovation for Coronell '18 highlights award ceremony

Raquel Coronell '18 received a resounding standing ovation from her peers to highlight the Upper School Awards Program on April 26, which offered special recognition to dozens of students for academic excellence, leadership, spirit, service, character or good citizenship. Coronell, a cancer survivor who was diagnosed with a form of leukemia in 2015, received one of five all-school awards: the Elliott Kayton '96 Award.
Math teacher Karen Key, the coach of the math team, received the other standing ovation at the Lewis Family Auditorium, after it was announced that students voted her the recipient of the Student Government Association Faculty Spirit Award.

The other all-school awards went to Ben Rosenthal '18 (Ronni Weksler Bermont Service Award presented by Peter Bermont); Anna Mistele '19 (Robert Segall '82 Leadership Award presented by Howard Srebnick '82); Eitan Dooreck-Aloni '18 (Arthur Moses Student Award); and Paulina Pages '18 (the School Spirit Award).

Faculty member Greg Cooper presented the Kayton award to Coronell, who missed most of the 2015-16 school year receiving chemotherapy and other treatment. Elliott Kayton passed away in 1993 at age 14 after a long battle with cancer, attending school when he could. His RE classmates started the Elliot Kayton Award in his honor, designating it for a recipient known for "character and action ... defined by a blend of perseverance, spirit, and genuine concern for others — a good heart. The honoree is an individual that the faculty would like future generations of students to emulate."

While in and out of hospitals, Coronell ignited a Bald is Beautiful Project, raising money to donate American Girl dolls without hair to other cancer patients. Coronell returned to school in the fall of 2016 to complete her junior year, joining the Class of 2018. She has since been active in Rock 4 Relief, band, Mu Alpha Theta, the Science National Honor Society, the National Honor Society and the district runner-up girls' tennis team.
