Congratulations ... and thank you

I write this from the Pagoda during the final hours of the academic year. Juniors are celebrating having taken possession of the Senior Deck, and the remaining underclassmen are breathing tremendous sighs of relief. All are looking forward to a different pace and different projects during the summer months. Students have shared with me their exciting plans for the Bowden fellowships, plans conceived and developed under the guidance of Dr. John King. Four rising juniors are fine-tuning their fall independent study coursework – a new elective at RE – with their advisors.
Still others are finalizing college application selection and plans with their college counselors, before departing on next week’s college tour with those very counselors. This weekend football players will attend the South Florida Select Football Camp with new head coach Roger Caron, while other athletes will be performing across the country at tournaments, clinics and regattas throughout the summer. Debaters will spend a week in June at the national championships with teacher Kate Hamm. With the help of faculty members and RE alums, many of our students will be pursuing summer internships in research, medicine, the fine arts and businesses. Students will attend drama camps, coding camps and music camps. Others will punch a time card at a paying job.

We have always believed the secret to a successful school is a talented cohort of students surrounded by teachers and coaches who believe in them and create the environment where they can find success. Without the encouragement and enormous time commitment of my RE colleagues, we would not be celebrating the myriad successes and ambitious goals of our students. Just ask our valedictorian, Jorge Zreik ’18, who shared his gratitude during his valedictory address at commencement. “The faculty members at this school have been not only educators but mentors, too,” he said. “It’s not an overstatement to say that the faculty of Ransom Everglades are what makes this school great.”

I couldn’t agree more. Congratulations, students! And thank you, RE faculty. You are valued more than you know.

I hope you all have a wonderful summer.
