Senior parents meet RE's college counseling team

RE's college counseling team met with senior parents at the Lewis Family Auditorium on Aug. 28, sharing the nuts and bolts of the college-application process, alerting them to a host of upcoming events, taking questions and offering guidance and reassurance.
This year's college counseling staff – senior associate director Claudia Jolivert and counselors Blair Betts, Roger Caron, Lourdes Cowgill, William Tran and Marty Elkins (who was not present) – emphasized that the year will be team effort. "We are all here for all of the seniors," said Jolivert, who is continuing her eight-year tenure at RE in 2018-19 after a two-year absence. "We're a team. We're working with every single one of them. If one of us happens not to be available, we ask our parents to reach out to someone else on the team."

The counselors addressed a variety of topics including student obligations, procedures, dates, deadlines and opportunities for athletes. Roger Caron, the Coordinator of Student Athlete College Recruitment, will elaborate on the college process for student-athletes during the College Counseling Athletic Recruitment Information Session on Oct. 2.

The event represented the first college-counseling event of 2018-19 with an introductory meeting for junior parents scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 4. The first of more than 100 visits to RE from various college representatives will take place a day later, when Johns Hopkins University admission associates meet with RE seniors.

The college counseling team will be offering a number of important sessions for students and parents in October:

Oct. 2: College Counseling Athletic Recruitment Information Session led by Roger Caron at 7 p.m. at the Lewis Family Auditorium.
Oct. 7: Mock Interview with the Alumni Office to help seniors prepare for interviews; last year more than two dozen alumni showed up. From 12-3 p.m. in the US dining hall.
