Speech and debate collects top finishes

The RE speech and debate team earned a pair of victories in a local tournament and scored well in recent state and national competitions. Noah Gold '22 and Zach Marcus '22 led the team with two gold-medal finishes in a state and local events in novice public forum debate, and Georgia Crosby '21 scored a top finish in informative speaking as many other team members posted strong results.
Gold and Marcus won the novice public forum debate in the Florida Blue Key Speech and Debate Tournament at the University of Florida in Gainesville Oct. 27-28 and the South Florida Catholic Forensic League #1 at West Broward. Oct. 20. At the Blue Key event, Marcus finished first and Gold second in the competition for the top speaker award.

Other top finishes at Blue Key: Alex Dray '21 advanced to the semifinal round of Varsity Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking; the quarterfinals of Varsity Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking; and the octofinals of Varsity Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking; Lucas Miner '20 was a quarterfinalist in Varsity Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking; and Alexandria Henriquez '22, a quarterfinalist in Dramatic Interpretation of Literature.

At the South Florida Catholic Forensic League #1, RE had four teams besides Gold and Marcus finish in the top 10 in novice public forum: Amelia Fox '22 and Andre Joseph '22 placed second; David Dubovy '22 and Sophia Rubenstein '22 placed fourth; and Jackson Mopsick '21 and Wirth Munroe '22 claimed sixth. In individual eventsCrosby placed first in Informative speaking and Nati Botero '20 placed third in dramatic performance. 

Dashiell Destefano '22 placed second in novice congress, Katerina Ortega '22 placed fourth in novice congress in one chamber, Madison Munroe '22 placed fourth in novice congress in another chamber, and Matthew Gallagher '21 placed fifth in varsity congress. 

At the New York City Invitational Debate and Speech Tournament at The Bronx High School of Science in New York Oct. 12-14, Dori Schurr '20 and Oliver Stern '19 broke into elimination rounds in varsity public forum and Miner made it to quarterfinals in varsity extemporaneous speaking.

At the Nova Titan Invitational Oct. 6 in Davie, 
Megan Houchin '19 placed 5th in informative speaking and Zoe San Martin '20 advanced to the semifinals for varsity congress. In team events, Bruce Jaggid '21 and Frank McPhillips '21 broke into elimination rounds in varsity public forum.
