RE musicians merit all-state honors

Five RE student musicians –  Connor Munroe '21 (tenor sax and clarinet), Eva Gonzalez-Whitehouse '22 (violin), Ian Barnett '23 (violin), Branden Cabrera '23 (viola) and Max Bast '23 (percussion) – won all-state recognition for 2019 during a week in which both the Middle School and Upper School bands earned high marks at the Florida Bandmasters Association District Solo/Ensemble Music Performance Assessments under the direction of Jon Hamm and Cathi Leibinger. Nine Upper School students qualified for the state event.
Barnett and Branden Cabrera were selected for the 2019 All-State Middle School Orchestra, and Bast was selected for the 2019 All-State Middle School Honor Band. Gonzalez-Whitehouse (violin) was named to the High School Honors All-State Orchestra, and Munroe for the fourth straight year earned a place in the Florida All-State Jazz Band. Those students will represent RE at the FBA convention in Tampa in January 2019.

Leibinger works with RE's Middle School band students and Hamm, the Upper School students. Performing arts teacher Jessica Carrasquillo works with RE's string students.

Forty Upper School band students participated in the MPA on Nov. 1-2, performing in 20 events. RE received 17 "superior" ratings with a total of 32 superior medals. See the full results below. "I am most proud of our Symphonic Band musicians who, in the face of challenging circumstances, have performed with great heart and great skill for many different events this year," Hamm said.

Middle School students earned superior ratings in all 19 events. RE musicians received 21 superior ratings with a medal count of 27 superior medals earned. "Congratulations go to all of our REMS Band students who put forth amazing effort during a very busy time of year," Leibinger said.
