MLK Day of Service at Middle School

Ransom Everglades Middle School students, faculty and administration performed a day of service in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 21, using sewing machines and their artistic talents to convert ordinary pillowcases into beautiful dresses that will be delivered to under-resourced children in Africa through the non-profit Little Dresses for Africa.
Volunteers completed 35 dresses from the more than 80 pillowcases donated by members of the Ransom Everglades community. RE partnered with members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Pi Delta Omega, the Miami-based chapter of a national organization of professional, college-educated women devoted to “service to all mankind.”
Joining RE students at the service day were Head of School Penny Townsend, Athletic Director Corey Goff, faculty and staff members Lilliam Fernandez, Jan Bekkevold, Ellen Grant, Dora Stephens and Francie Hall. REPA President Melissa Buckner also shared her time along with several other parents, siblings and grandparents. Little Dresses for Africa club advisor Doreen Johnson organized the first-time event.
The participating students included: Catherine Buckner '24, Mackenzie Buckner '24, Andre Coscarelli '23, Collin Goff '24 (and brother Michael), Vicky Paz Pinilla '25, Taylor Smith '25 and Sofia Wolf '23.
