For the third consecutive year, Ransom Everglades' RE Combo and the Blue Note Combo earned straight "Superior" ratings at the Florida Bandmasters Association District 20 Jazz Band Music Performance Assessment in Key Largo. Under the Director of Instrumental Music Jon Hamm, both ensembles have qualified for the state-level assessment in West Palm Beach this March.
Ransom Everglades upper school student-writers excelled in the 2026 Regional Scholastic Writing Awards, collecting four Gold Keys, 12 Silver Keys, and 14 Honorable Mentions, highlighting RE's literary talent in categories including poetry, fiction-writing and screenplays. Isla Dua '27, Victoria De Vera ’27, Patrick Keedy Brown ’26, and Michael Kong ’28 each earned multiple awards including prestigious Gold Key recognitions, putting them in the top seven percent of all regional entries and advancing in the national competition.
Seven students on Ransom Everglades' upper school math team earned top scores on a major national math exam as the calculus team excelled at a regional competition, a testament to the team's preparation and commitment under coaches Sebastian Revolloand Thor Andreassen '17.
Joshie Khohayting '28, Daniel Li '28, Kai Duwin '26 and Gabriel Karsenti '26 (top 10 percent) and Robert Li '26, Armin Stamate '26 and Minnie Zhou '26 (top 25 percent), each qualified for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) with their performances on the American Mathematics Competitions 10 and 12 – an impressive distinction reserved for the top tier of math students in the United States.
For the fourth straight year, RE's middle school math team won the Miami Mathcounts competition. Four students placed in the top 15 – Ivy Chen '30 (third place), Maya Lee-Schonfeld '30 (seventh), Yifan Shen '30 (eighth) and Ivar Kostowicz '31 (15th) – one of RE's best performances ever in the local championship. Math team members displayed teamwork and problem-solving skills under coach Ashley Ernst and also won the ciphering round, which showcases speed and accuracy under pressure.
Ransom Everglades robotics students excelled at the VEX IQ Robotics Competition Mix & Match Qualifier held recently at Rockway Middle School in Miami on January 24. In a field of 35 teams, Jack Milota '30, Ryan Kantesaria '30, Jayden Goodman '30 and Alex Lord Borja '30 secured two of the tournament's top honors: the Amaze Award, recognizing excellence in robot design and programming, and Robot Skills Champion.
Five Ransom Everglades golfers and one football player earned first-team all-county honors for fall sports from the Miami Herald as 44 student-athletes at Ransom Everglades earned recognition. Golfers Cole Durham '29, Nina Fischer '29, Axel Monssoh '30, Esha Nagalla '29 and Hugo Stenstrom '26 were joined by Colton Smith '28 as first-team selections. Durham was also named the Miami-Dade Golfer of the Year for classes 1A-3A, and golf coachDave Raganearned Miami-Dade Coach of the Year for golf in 1A-3A. Find the full Herald story here.
Ransom Everglades' ninth graders traveled to the Ten Thousand Islands in three waves in January, continuing an experiential learning tradition that dates back to the 1970s. The students journeyed by canoe and camped under the moonlight as they practiced the navigational skills they learned in their physical education classes throughout the fall. Ransom Everglades students explored ethical decision making in banking, real estate and lending during a special assembly and roundtable discussion with prominent banker Lance Drummond. The latest speaker in the Holzman Center of Applied Ethics Speaker Series at RE, Drummond answered questions from students and Holzman Center Director John A. King, Jr., who joined him on the Lewis Family Auditorium stage for the opening assembly with upper school students.
Ransom Everglades students, parents, alumni and professional community members participated in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service with the Joshua's Heart Foundation on January 19, showing RE's core values in action by distributing food and household supplies to Miami families. The collaboration with the service organization founded by Joshua Williams '18 allowed RE to help 1,470 individuals, 342 families and 715 children.
The Ransom Everglades Dance Team won two awards at the Florida Dance Challenge January 24 at Hialeah Gardens High School. The entire team placed third in Large Varsity Contemporary/Modern and a small group consisting of dance team members Isabella Rojas-Cueva '26, Sofia Berkshire '26, Katy Elgarresta '27 and Mia Vasa '28 placed second in Small Advanced Varsity Contemporary/Modern.
Ransom Everglades students and faculty provided a three-day academic immersion program January 23-25 for 23 pediatric cancer patients treated at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital who are unable to attend in-person school. About 30 student volunteers organized by the Volunteer Service Organization and eight RE teachers provided classroom experiences designed to reintegrate the campus visitors into a traditional classroom environment.
Student and faculty speakers explored the complex "threads" that bind humanity together during the TEDxRansomEvergladesSchool event held January 31 at the Posner Lecture Hall. Presenters Matilda Barrack ’27, Olivia Karp ’27, Samuel Bussel-Alonso ’27, Maryam Astorga ’27,Luisa Duarte ’27 and faculty member Jesus Quintero offered thoughtful talks focused on how internal and external connections shape modern ideas and global society.

Ransom Everglades students and faculty across both campuses paused to observe Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27, engaging in a powerful series of assemblies and activities focused on resilience, survival and preserving memories. The day's events included a talk by Judy Rodan, a Holocaust survivor who shared her heartbreaking story of loss with middle school students at Swenson Hall.
Ransom Everglades visual artists on both campuses won recognition in two prestigious art and photography competitions. Eleven middle and upper school students were selected for publication in the Fall 2025 Art ContestCelebrating Art sponsored by Blick Art Materials. In the realm of digital media, three upper school photographers achieved top-tier rankings in the Drexel University High School Photography Contest.
A 19-student delegation from Ransom Everglades enjoyed a cultural immersion and intellectual adventure at the 58th annual The Hague International Model United Nations conference, which took place January 26-30 in The Netherlands.The RE Model UN team joined over 3,000 peers from across the globe to address international challenges under the theme "Culture & Heritage: Embracing Diversity."
Ransom Everglades' speech and debate team continued a strong competitive season with excellent performances at national and regional tournaments in January. RE students claimed 11 top-four finishes at the Cavalier Invitational in Durham, N.C., and multiple event championships at the Sunvitational in Davie, Fla.
Things looked bleak for the Ransom Everglades girls' soccer team early in the district championship at Miami Dade College. The Raiders' top goal scorer and offensive star was sidelined with an injury. The Raiders fell behind, 1-0. And they watched another key player leave the field with a first-half injury.
But even with the demoralizing start, early deficit and depleted roster against True North Classical Academy in the January 27 contest, the Raiders rallied for a convincing 2-1 victory and third consecutive district championship under coach Antonio Boada.
Returning to the stage where he graduated 25 years ago, Matthew Beatty '01 received a standing ovation after delivering a powerful call to action to the Ransom Everglades upper school students during a special assembly January 15 in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Drawing parallels between the school’s mission and the legacy of the late civil rights leader, Beatty challenged students to carve out their futures as ethical leaders and community architects.
The annual College Admission Symposium at Ransom Everglades offered RE juniors and their parents an inside look at the college admission process from admission officers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Claremont McKenna College and the University of Chicago. Parents submitted their questions in advance for the January 8 event at the Lewis Family Auditorium, and benefited from insights shared during a panel discussion moderated by Co-Executive Director of College Counseling Jordan Shapiro.
