Signature Programs
Marine Science Programs
Biscayne Bay is in Ransom Everglades' backyard, serving as an outdoor classroom and source of daily challenges and wonder. RE’s Marine Field Research and ninth-grade Bay Studies students explore the bay on research vessels or in canoes, kayaks and sailboats. Members of the Young REsearchers Program and biology students collect water samples and study the components with a laser, working together to understand the problems facing the bay.
Many RE students obtain their SCUBA certification, allowing them to conduct underwater research. Students’ marine-related work in recent years has been recognized with awards at major scientific conferences, and several students have authored peer-reviewed scientific papers.
Ransom Everglades views the bay not only as a resource for its students, but also a responsibility. As the bay has served to educate generations of students at Ransom Everglades, the school works to ensure that it is prioritized and protected. The various elements of our marine science program are focused on that objective.

Six sharks tagged on recent student expedition
Read MoreStudents in RE's Marine Field Research classes tagged and tested six sharks during a pair of research trips on Biscayne Bay in November. Under the direction of shark expert and RE faculty member Kristine Stump and scientists from the Field School, RE students assisted with full-scale scientific work-ups of each shark while also helping to place tags that would allow the creatures to be tracked. -
Another RE student wins scientific recognition
Another Ransom Everglades student won recognition from the Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies for work on a scientific poster. James Brown Urmeneta '24, the lead author and presenter on a poster describing a new technique for measuring cobalt in aqueous solutions, received a monetary award from the federation. Brown Urmeneta, who collaborated with Ella Lombardo '24 and Max Vallone '22, presented the poster at the Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies SciX 2021 symposium in Providence, R.I., on September 26.Read More -
RE students excel in scientific poster competition
Max Vallone ’22 won a top scientific poster award at the Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies SciX 2021 symposium in Providence, R.I., on September 26 as seven posters by Ransom Everglades students were included among 33 finalists. The symposium, which continued with poster sessions throughout the week, bills itself as the premier meeting for analytical chemistry and allied sciences, drawing poster submissions from graduate students, college students and post-docs.Read More -
Marine Field Research students go shark tagging
Ransom Everglades’ Marine Field Research students participated in one of the course's signature field trips: a shark-tagging excursion. Two classes of juniors and seniors each spent a day aboard a 55-foot research vessel in mid-February, looking for sharks on Biscayne Bay near Stiltsville and then, when a catch was made, stabilizing the shark and executing a number of research tasks.Read More -
RE students attend international research conference
Read MoreStudents in the Marine Field Research class at the upper school prepared for end-of-semester assessments by attending an international scientific research conference alongside some 20,000 scientists from around the world. RE students joined the online American Geophysical Union's Fall Meeting in December, participating in various workshops and sessions. -

Gross '20 wins college poster competition
Joseph Gross '20 once again topped a field of college scientists in a science poster competition, winning first prize at the University of Miami's Big Data Conference and VizUM Symposium Dec. 11. Gross earned $500 for his poster entitled “Machine Learning for Metal Identification in Water Samples Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy."Read More -
RE students win prestigious research recognition
Three Ransom Everglades students became the first high school students in five years to win recognition at an annual scientific conference typically dominated by college and graduate students. Founded in 1903, Ransom Everglades School is a coeducational, college preparatory day school for grades 6 - 12 located on two campuses in Coconut Grove, Florida.
