Annual College Admission Symposium provides insights and guidance

The annual College Admission Symposium at Ransom Everglades offered RE juniors and their parents an inside look at the college admission process from admission officers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Claremont McKenna College and the University of Chicago. Parents submitted their questions in advance for the January 8 event at the Lewis Family Auditorium, and benefited from insights shared during a panel discussion moderation by Co-Executive Director of College Counseling Jordan Shapiro.
UNC Associate Provost and Director of Undergraduate Admissions Jared Rosenberg, Claremont McKenna Vice President of Admission and Financial Jennifer Sandoval and University of Chicago Associate Vice President and Dean of College Admissions Peter Wilson discussed a wide-range of topics ranging from academic rigor, course selection, essays, institutional priorities, GPA, extra-curricular activities and testing. Each also shared a piece of take-home advice.

"Tonight is really a peek behind that curtain," Shapiro told parents. "Tonight's conversation is really designed to address the questions that we know are top of mind for you all .... [and] gives families a broader lens into how colleges think about applicants."

A day later during the school day, the admission leaders participated in two concurrent sessions with RE juniors, one focusing on broadening the understanding of different types of colleges and universities, the other on the qualitiative aspects of the college admission process, and how students can differentiate themselves and stand out.
