Ransom Everglades celebrated 100 years of Black History Month with vibrant festivals of learning and culture on February 5-6. From history lessons and jazz performances to Afro-Caribbean dance and "stepping," both campuses offered activities that highlighted Black achievements, artistry and resilience.
"Black history is American history," middle school emcee London Ross '32 said. "It reminds us of the struggles people faced, the progress that has been made, and the work that still lies ahead."
The upper school event included a guest appearance by the Florida International University chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, which included a performance of stepping, a percussive dance style where the body becomes the instrument. The RE Combo performed jazz pieces on both campuses; RE Director of Instrumental Music Jon Hamm provided a short history of jazz in the United States and noted that the RE Combo had performed in 29 Black History Month festivals at Ransom Everglades. On both campuses, students participated in an instructor-led Afro-Caribbean dance performance.
The events were organized and carried out by members of the upper school Black Student Association, Director of Inclusion and Community Engagement Wendell Graham '74, Middle School Dean of Community Engagement & Multicultural Affairs Karina Buhler, Director of Instrumental Music Jon Hamm, students, faculty and RE parents.
Noted Mason Pearce '30: "Black History Month gives us the opportunity ... to recognize how Black voices and contributions continue to shape our world today."
