Seventh-grade students enjoy service learning in New Mexico

Ransom Everglades seventh graders enjoyed a service-learning expedition through New Mexico March 19-22, where they focused on indigenous culture, history and community engagement through guided exploration. The students traveled from the summit of the Sandia Mountains to the historic Zuni Reservation, following an itinerary designed to provide a hands-on look at the intersection of ancient tradition and modern community leadership.
A primary focus of the trip was a visit to the Zuni Pueblo, where students took part in the Zuni Youth Enrichment Project (ZYEP). During their time on the reservation, students hiked the Great Kivas ceremonial site, viewed ancient petroglyphs and learned traditional skills including arrowhead making and braiding from tribal members.

The cultural deep-dive continued in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, where students participated in a traditional Pueblo cuisine cooking class, learning to prepare red chili and tamales. The group also explored Old Town Albuquerque and Santa Fe, visiting the San Miguel Mission – the oldest church in the continental United States.

The expedition concluded with a reflection on the Spring Equinox ceremonies and the importance of cultural preservation under the leadership of Head of School Pete Di Pace, Middle School Dean of Students J.P. Arrastia and faculty members Greg Noblet, Victoria Castells, Alissa Hirschl and Connie Hyde.
