Marine adventure of a lifetime for students in Bimini

Seven students enjoyed a marine adventure of a lifetime during a six-day Marine Science Experiential Trip to the Bimini Biological Field Station, commonly known as the Sharklab. From March 28 to April 2, the group engaged in field research and species identification in the waters surrounding the islands.
During the expedition, the group identified and swam with eight different shark species, hammerhead, tiger, bull, lemon, nurse, reef, blacktip and blacknose sharks. Among the trip highlights: cage-diving with bull sharks, which allowed students to observe the animals' behavior and movement patterns firsthand.

In addition to shark research, the students participated in several other marine activities. They hand-fed stingrays to study their anatomy and explored the SS Sapona, a historic shipwreck that serves as a significant artificial reef for local biodiversity. The group also witnessed a rare intersection of marine science and aerospace history when they viewed the Artemis II launch from the beach during the trip.

The trip was led by RE STEM faculty members Kristine Stump and Robin Escobedo. For Dr. Stump, the expedition marked a return to the facility where she lived for several years while completing her doctoral research.

The experience at the Sharklab provided the participants with an up-close look at the daily operations of a working field station, from boat-based field observations to the study of elasmobranch ecology.

The student participants for the 2026 trip were Ginger Seabrook '26, Olivia Augustin '26, Addie Rothfield '27, Holly Clement '27, Trulie Feingold '27, Penelope Galvin '28 and Stella Steinbook '28.
