RE sailors advance to two national championship regattas
The Ransom Everglades sailing team has successfully qualified for two of the nation’s most prestigious high school regattas following a first-place finish at the 2026 team race district championship and a third-place finish at the 2026 fleet race district championship. With top finishes at both district events, the Raiders have earned the right to compete for national titles in Virginia and Louisiana in late May.
Ransom Everglades’ decisive victory at the April 18-19 team race district event – the South Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Association (SAISA) Baker Team Race Qualifier at RE – qualified the team for the Baker Team Racing National Championship May 15-17 in Christchurch, Va. Competing under coaches David Bargehr and Nikole Barnes, the district champion sailors showed high-level communication and coordination of their three boats to earn the victory.
The top-three finish at the fleet race championship on April 11-12 in Charleston, S.C. – the SAISA Doublehanded Championship/Mallory Qualifier – advanced the Raiders to the Mallory Fleet Race National Championship in New Orleans May 30 to June 1.
The sailors at both events: Leyla Amjad ’26, Sander Block ’28, Elisa De Becker ’28, Carmela Brana ’29, Ava McAliley ’26, Sofia Rhone-Fernandez ’26, Annie Ulmer ’29, Max Wolfensberger ’26 and Tommy Zaydon ’28.
The dual qualification highlights the versatility of the RE sailing program, which allows sailors to master the collaborative strategy of team racing and the tactical skills required in large-scale fleet racing.
