RE girls' soccer wins third straight district title with hard-fought victory

Things looked bleak for the Ransom Everglades' girls soccer team early in the district championship at Miami Dade College. The Raiders' top goal scorer and offensive star was sidelined with an injury. The Raiders fell behind, 1-0. And they watched another key player leave the field with a first-half injury.

But even with the demoralizing start, early deficit and depleted roster against True North Classical Academy in the January 27 contest, the Raiders persevered. The girls' team rallied for a convincing 2-1 victory and third consecutive district championship under coach Antonio Boada.
With offensive star Stella Colombo '26 on the sidelines, Ella Balestra '27 got the start and contributed four steals in 40 minutes. When Andy Lamar ’29 was forced to leave the game with a hamstring injury, Marina Hicks '29 stepped in and contributed five steals. Meanwhile, the entire Raiders squad stepped up.

Johanna James ’26 and Charlie Jaffee ’28 provided all the offense the Raiders needed, each scoring in the first half. In the second half, the Raiders' stifling defense sealed the game. RE recorded a staggering 51 steals, with Avery Almazan ’24 leading the relentless defensive effort with six steals, and Kenzie Connell ’26, Karina McMahon '29, Reese Almazan '28, Olivia Geller ’26 and Hicks each claiming five.

Behind them, goalkeeper Marina Molina ’29 played with the composure of a veteran, making several key stops to preserve the one-goal lead. The girls celebrated joyfully, raising the district championship trophy that will remain in Coconut Grove for the next year.

The Raiders will continue their title quest in the regional playoffs.
