Six seniors named U.S. Presidential Scholar candidates

Six students from Ransom Everglades School have been named candidates for the 2026 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, according to a recent announcement by the U.S. Department of Education. The nominees,  Alexa Duenas '26, Oliver Duwin '26, Beatrice Hernandez '26, Nelson Manstein '26, Sofia Rhone-Fernandez '26 and Minnie Zhou '26, were selected on the basis of standardized test scores or recommendations from state education officials. The program, established in 1964 by Presidential Executive Order, is considered one of the nation's highest honors for graduating high school seniors.
The Ransom Everglades students were among approximately 5,000 candidates identified from around the nation. Students do not apply for this initial candidacy, nor are they nominated by their individual schools. If the RE seniors complete the required application, they may continue in the contest for the Presidential Scholar medals awarded to 161 seniors in May.

Since its inception, the program has expanded twice to recognize a broader range of student achievement:. In 1979, it was expanded to include students with exceptional talent in the visual, creative, and performing arts. In 2015, it grew to include students demonstrating accomplishment in career and technical fields.

In April, a panel of educators will review candidate applications to select approximately 600 semifinalists, and in May the Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group of up to 32 citizens appointed by the President, will select the final 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars.
