Crew FSRA Sweep Championship

Three State Trophies

The Ransom Everglades Crew competed against Florida Scholastic Rowing Association (FSRA) teams from 41 schools in the 2017 State Sweep Championships at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida on Saturday and Sunday, April 29 and 30. Thirty-two Ransom athletes traveled to the very competitive FSRA State Championships lead by Head Coach Francisco Viacava, Geronimo Fernandez, and Lorenzo Diaz. The rowers performed under extreme conditions with very strong tailwinds and temperatures topping 96 degrees. Ransom Everglades Crew raced seven boats, and was up against crews whose entries totaled 20 boats.  Six out of those seven boats advanced into the grand final despite punishing conditions and fierce competition.

Racing as a freshman this year, Sarah Zanzuri '20, Isabella Ciocca ‘20,  Julia Buckner ‘20, Ashley Nguyen ‘20, and coxswain Charith Reddy '20 competed in the Girls Freshman 4+ event. They set school records by being the first freshman boat to ever win this category and earn the Girl’s Freshman 4+ Dragonfly Cup. The Girls Lightweight four impressed everyone, even earning remarks from the announcers regarding their skill and precision. Ines Pinilla ‘18, Alana Miro ‘17, Gabriella Ouellette '18, Sophia Elliott ‘18, and Falyn Goldstein '18 (coxswain) took home the Girls Lightweight 4+ Florida Scholastic Cup for a second year in a row.
It was a dramatic and emotional final race with the Boy’s 1st Varsity 4+ that included three seniors in the boat:  Omry Alfi (‘17), Christopher Carlos (‘17) and Jordan Mishael (‘17) along with Gabriel Echarte (‘18), and Baylar Ratzan (coxswain) (‘17). This strong crew competed together one last time in this category, racing hard in a neck and neck finish, finally taking 1st place in the Boy’s 1st Varsity 4+ William Feaster Memorial Cup.
“I am so impressed by this young team,” says Viacava, “They row hard together, showing strength in the ultimate team sport. They know they are never alone.”
Overall, the team defied all expectations by winning seven Scholastic State Championship trophies, and qualifying six boats for Scholastic Nationals. The next race will be held on Saturday, May 13, at the Southeast Youth Championships in Gainesville, Georgia and the last  race of the season will be held on Friday – Saturday, May 26th and 27th  at the SRAA Scholastics Championships, in the Cooper River in Camden, NJ.
