Students on both campuses observe Holocaust Remembrance Day

Ransom Everglades students and faculty across both campuses paused to observe Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27, engaging in a powerful series of assemblies and activities focused on resilience, survival and preserving memories. The day's events included a talk by Judy Rodan, a Holocaust survivor who shared her heartbreaking story of loss with middle school students at Swenson Hall.
Rodan, who has a published memoir called A Quest To Being, was smuggled into a convent as a little girl while her entire family was sent to the concentration camp at Auschwitz. She was joined by Leigh Pollack ’98 and Hagit Fefferman from 3G Miami, an organization of grandchildren of survivors; each met separately with middle school students to share her family's stories. All reminded students of the critical importance of never forgetting the atrocities of the past. Emma Hall ’30 provided an introduction, and students created posters featuring ideas for eliminating hate and prejudice within their communities.

At the upper school, Humanities Department Chair Jen Nero shared the story of her uncle’s escape from the Holocaust and the losses he experienced. Nero challenged students to view history as a living responsibility. "Remembering is not and can never be a passive act," she said. "The act of remembering, in fact, is a window into the best and worst parts of our shared humanity."

The upper school assembly was organized by the Jewish Student Association. Club officers Dana Chopp ’26, Spencer Geller ’27, and Zachary Myones ’27 offered an introduction and JSA advisor Myriam Gollan offered concluding remarks that underscored the school’s commitment to fostering a culture of empathy and historical awareness. In a solemn ceremony to close the event, JSA members took the stage to recognize family members of current RE students and professional staff who lived through the Holocaust.
