From the Desk of the Head of School: The pursuit of excellence at Ransom Everglades
Walking across our campuses during the school day – and long after it concludes – offers a window into the depth and breadth of the student experience at Ransom Everglades. Our students, curious and eager learners, explore far outside the traditional classroom. They challenge themselves on our fields and stages, in our studios and on the bay, in our maker spaces and laboratories. Some days bring thrilling discoveries, satisfying victories or moments of great progress. Others offer challenges, defeat, rainouts.
That is what the pursuit of excellence looks like. Our students find joy in the journey.
Whether taking advantage of myriad opportunities in sports, the arts or academics, or joining in on-campus festivals and learning expeditions on Biscayne Bay, our students often seem to illustrate Newton’s First Law: an object in motion stays in motion. When the school day ends, many remain on campus. The end of classes signals the beginning of additional explorations. Many experience RE as a community center and second home.
In recent weeks, drama students have prepared for performances on both campuses. RE swimmers and golfers wound down their fall seasons with district titles. Student musicians offered a scintillating Jazz and Guitar Concert. Our speech and debate, robotics and academic teams won an assortment of competitions. During the school day, our community celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival and Diwali, and students in our Pathways Scholars and Young REsearchers Program immersed themselves in projects. Upper school students conducted marine field research on the bay and inside the classroom, and went canoeing, exploring and sailing. When visiting humanities classes from Spanish 1 to Literary Theory and STEM classes from Math 6 to Physics, it becomes easy to see excellence in the classroom – from faculty and from their inspired students.
There is much, much more to come.
Through the practices and the games, the performances and the rehearsals, the experiments and presentations – and every day in our classrooms – our students discover joy and confidence, and learn resilience, leadership, honor and excellence. Whether working alone or in small groups or facing a critical moment in front of an audience, our students grow as scholars, athletes, artists and, most importantly, well-rounded citizens of the world. When their time at RE concludes, they will be ready for a brand-new journey. Graduating into a world in need of difference makers, they will be fully prepared to make that difference.
