RE's middle school celebrates Hispanic-Latino Heritage Month
Middle school students recognized the cuisine, contributions and histories of Hispanic-Latino culture with a celebration of Hispanic-Latino Heritage Month that included a special assembly and lunch on September 26. The festivities opened in the gymnasium at an event emceed by eighth graders, Alia Rahman '30, Eli Fernandez '30 and Caro Fernandez '30. It featured Spanish poetry readings by AP Spanish students Ana Luisa Ramirez '30,Victoria Costa '30, Matias Uster Valdivieso '30 and Gabriel Revilla '30, and a Portuguese poetry reading by Clara Sanchez '30 and Nina Karam-Silva '30.
"This month reminds us of the incredible diversity and impact of Hispanic and Latino communities through music, art, literature, food, dance and so much more," Caro Fernandez told the middle school student body. "And today, we get to celebrate right here at Ransom Everglades."
After a Latin dance performance by the sixth-grade dance class, students headed to the quad, breezeway and field for Hispanic-Latino cuisine, a Copa América soccer tournament with students playing on teams representing various Latin American countries, a cacao demonstration, dominos tables, Frida Kahlo-inspired floral crafts, and salsa and samba dancing.
Many parents helped make the event a success, supplying and distributing food and helping with crafts and games. The celebration was organized by Karina Bühler, the middle school Dean of Community Engagement and Multicultural Affairs.
