Middle school enjoys a colorful and festive Mid-Autumn Festival

The middle school came alive with performances and cultural activities to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival on October 3. Students in middle school Chinese classes performed traditional – and challenging – Chinese songs and acted out a classic skit during a special assembly in the gymnasium. Nina Shah '30 and Claire Tate '30 served as emcees, and members of the Ransom Everglades Parents' Association volunteered at various activity stations around the campus.
Chinese D students gave a presentation introducing the festival’s origin, significance and celebration in other countries. Sabina Wright '30 and Shah presented the Korean and Japanese traditions, helping make the event more inclusive. Chinese B, C and D students acted out the festival legend in which Chang’e flies to the moon and Houyi shoots down the nine suns.

Noah Mitchell '31 sang “Rare Words” in Chinese, a song that is challenging even for many native speakers. He received a huge round of applause. Jerry Yang '30 from Chinese D class performed a piano solo, "Butterfly Lovers." Shah and Sophia Zhao '32 sang "Jasmine Flower," accompanied by pianist Celine Yang ’32.

After the assembly, students headed to the breezeway and quad for fun activities. They enjoyed making lanterns and traditional sweets, using water colors to paint fans, playing Chinese games, dabbling in calligraphy and drinking bubble tea.
