RE recognizes Division I student-athlete signees
Ransom Everglades honored five student-athletes who committed to National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I colleges. During a morning signing ceremony on Nov. 13, Lachlain McGranahan '20 (sailing, Harvard University), Nico Valls '20 (water polo, Santa Clara University), Zoe Tsoukas '20 (track and field, Brown University), Rachel DeAngulo '20 (golf, Northwestern University) and Jake Beker-Frankel '20 (golf, Stanford University) donned their future school's caps or sweatshirts as they were recognized by their high school coaches.
"These five distinguished athletes are also five distinguished student-athletes," Head of School Penny Townsend said. "We are proud of their success in the classroom and in their sports. They will represent Ransom Everglades at some of the top academic institutions in the country."
McGranahan, who arrived to Ransom Everglades in 11th grade, captained RE's sailing team to a district medal last year and Toby Baker championship berth, and this year led the team to its first keelboat national championship qualification in school history.
Valls, who won first-team All-Dade recognition in 2019, contributed as a freshman to the 2017 state championship team and was a major force on the 2018 district champion squad and last spring's district semifinalists.
Tsoukas, a first-team All-Dade selection last spring, has competed in a variety of track and field events since the seventh grade and won district medals in the 300 hurdles, long jump and pole vault last spring.
DeAngulo, a leader on the girls' golf team for years, won her first district title this fall, finished third in the region and 13th in the state championship meet.
Beber-Frankel is, according to coach Dave Ragan, the best golfer in Miami-Dade history; he won district and regional championships and, this summer, he set a Boys PGA Championship record for lowest score in a single round. He finished third in the state meet.
