Freshman wins national math recognition

Sofia Dimitra Paraoulaki de Miranda '23 finished among the top 149 female students across the nation on the tenth-grade American Mathematics Competition exam, earning an inaugural Maryam Mirzakhani AMC 10 Award from the Mathematical Association of America, the organization announced in March. She took the exam under upper school math team coach Karen Key.
Maryam Mirzakhani was an inspirational mathematician and professor of mathematics at Stanford University. She was the first female honored with the Fields Medal, the most prestigious award in mathematics and is an International Mathematical Olympiad gold medalist with a perfect score. On July 14, 2017, Mirzakhani died of breast cancer at the age of 40.
