Seniors celebrate college choices on May 1

RE seniors celebrated National College Signing Day on May 1 by planting virtual flags to mark their college matriculation decisions on the REmote College Destinations map. With nearly every decision in, the Class of 2020 is heading to 64 different colleges in more than 25 states. The flag celebration, organized by the school's college counseling office, honored the theme of the senior class: Quality over Quantity.
Seniors also got a head start on their Freshman Fifteen by enjoying to-go slices of pie from the iconic Fireman Derek's Bake Shop in Coconut Grove, a fun gift to the Class of 2020 from their support team in the college counseling office.

As the seniors' journey through the college process at RE concludes, the college counseling office continues with programs for juniors and other upper school students. Here's a look at the RE college counseling initiatives during REmote School:

1. Virtual one-on-one meetings with juniors: All five counselors have continued to meet with their junior counselees at least once a month. Those meetings will continue through the end of the semester as well as during the summer, and remain the critical component of RE's college counseling curriculum.

2. Virtual college counseling office hours: RE's counselors are available Monday through Thursday from noon to 12:50 p.m. for drop-in office hours. Since students can't just drop by The Pagoda right during REmote School, the office still provides the opportunity for "walk-in" Q&As.

3. Case Study Night for Juniors: Learn more here

4. myCOMPASS Resources: Counselors have continued to update the extensive College Counseling Resources page in myCOMPASS, which is accessible to all members of the RE community. The office has also launched a new College Counseling Group page in myCOMPASS for the Class of 2021. This page is updated daily with a wealth of information from details on virtual college visits, updates to standardized testing, links to interesting recent articles, and upcoming events and webinars. Juniors can use this page to track their work with their college counselors and access critical resources to aid in their searches.

5. Junior Connections Virtual Classroom - Common Application Workshop: In early April, the college counseling office launched its virtual classroom, each Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. for juniors. Topics have included virtual college visits, demonstrated interest and letters of recommendation, In May, the classes will consist of workshops to introduce all members of the RE Class of 2021 to the Common Application. Counselors will work with students to create their accounts, walk them through the various sections and help them navigate the application platform.

6. Essay Workshop: The college counseling office will partner with a group of college admission representatives on May 30 to educate juniors about college application essays and offer guidance on how to advance the process during the summer.
