Double district titles in swimming
The boys’ and girls’ swim teams each celebrated a district championship on the Ansin Aquatic Center pool deck on October 31, the girls winning their 15th straight title as the boys claimed their seventh in a row. Magnus Kron ’21 earned three first place finishes and one second to highlight the Class 1A District 12 championships for the Raiders, who saw more than two dozen swimmers advance to the regional championships.
Kron won the 100 and 200 freestyle and swam the first leg on the winning 200 freestyle relay team, which included Alex Tong ’24, Victor Perez ’23 and Stephan Baker ’22; and he also led off the second-place 400 freestyle relay team that included Paolo Rebessi ’23, Tong and Baker. The boys’ 200 medley relay team of Milo Gorey ’24; Geronimo Carom ’22, Nathan Knight ’22; and Perez finished third.
Alex Garcia-Caceres ’23 won the boys’ 200 individual medley, with Carom earning second place; Knight, fourth; and Gorey, fifth. Gorey also earned fifth place in the 100 backstroke.
Rebessi finished second in the 200 free and third in the 500 free; Baker was third in the 100 free and Perez was fifth. In the 50 free, Baker earned third. In the boys’ 200 free, Tong finished fourth.
For the girls, the 200 freestyle relay team of Lauren Heller ’22, Sophie G ’22, Dylan Stone ’22 and Alexa Hommen ’22 earned first place; the 200 medley relay team of Mattie Barfield ’21, Marella Rebessi ’24, Sabrina Shipley ’22 and Sophie G scored second; and the 400 freestyle relay team of Heller, Sophie G, Stone and Hommen also claimed second place.
In the girls’ 200 freestyle, Carmen Sanchez-Tembleque ’23 earned second; Heller got fourth, and Stone ’22, fifth. Stone also earned fifth place in the 500 free.
In the 100 butterfly, Shipley earned third. In the 50 freestyle, Sophie G claimed fourth and Hommen, fifth. In the 100 free, Heller got fourth and Hommen, fifth. In the 100 back, Barfield earned fifth place.
Ransom Everglades’ boys tallied 464 points, topping Cutler Bay Academy (358) and Westminster Christian School (259). The girls collected 414 points, edging Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart (401) and Cutler Bay Academy (354). Both teams are led by coach Kyle Hastings, also the Director of Aquatics at Ransom Everglades.
