Boys' soccer falls just short in state championship game
Ransom Everglades boys' soccer team won a district title and regional championship, posted a 15-game winning streak, outscored its opponents 62-11, and advanced all the way to its first Florida High School Athletic Association state championship game since 2016. Some 250 students and faculty traveled by bus to DeLand, Fla., to support the Raiders in their title quest, but RE fell short against Tampa Prep by a 2-0 margin.
The finale against the nation's top-ranked boys' soccer team provided a disappointing end to what had been an amazing season for the Raiders, who hadn't lost a game since November 17, 2021, and posted an 18-1-3 record overall. Goalkeeper Jasper Broad '22 had a team record 15 shutouts this season, but the Terrapins managed a goal on a penalty kick goal early in the game and another on a header off a blocked shot in the second half.
The Raiders reached the championship by toppling The Bolles School, 1-0, in the regional final at Walker field in a rain-soaked game on February 19. They also won their second consecutive district championship with a hard fought 2-0 victory over Westminster Christian at home on February 2.
After a thrilling but scoreless first half, David Pulido ’22 pounced on a rebound from a shot by co-captain Dillan Kaye ’22 and fired in the Raiders' first goal from close range shortly after the halftime interval. Minutes later Kaye notched his second assist of the night when Nico Sosa ’23 met a long crossing pass with a spectacular diving header from a tight angle that slipped by the Warriors goalkeeper. Nicky Goldberg ’23 was outstanding in midfield while the back line of Juan Rivera ’22, Christian Sosa ’23 and co-captain Rylan Sadler ’22 helped Broad record his tenth shutout of the season.
The team was coached by Dave Villano '79 and helped by a team of assistants including Michiel ("Monkey") van de Kreeke '88 and Jim Beverley '62.
