Essay Workshops for RE Juniors with Dr. Christina Iglesias

STEM Posner Lecture Hall
Who are you, really? Colleges want to know–and college essays are how you tell them. Still, writing them can be a daunting task. Over the course of two workshops, students will take their first steps into the process, gaining exposure to the kinds of prompts they’ll encounter, insight into what makes a compelling essay, and strategies for approaching each essay genre.

Why this college? Why that major? What sorts of intellectual questions motivate you? What brings you joy? It’s not easy to answer these questions in a way that feels true to who you are, let alone in 250 words. These workshops are here to help. The first will introduce students to the personal essay and “Why” essay prompts, while the second will be devoted to the various other supplemental essays students will be expected to write.

The goal is not only to demystify this very important part of the application process, but also to reimagine it as a useful tool for self-reflection and exploration. Every college essay is an opportunity to engage in the important work of self-discovery that leads to authentic writing.
