MS and US academic teams qualify for nationals

Eleven Ransom Everglades students – six from the middle school – qualified for the 2021 History Bee and Bowl national championships in their respective divisions with excellent performances in spring virtual events. Parker Jelke '27 won the regional history bee competition among sixth graders on May 2, leading RE's middle school qualifiers. The varsity academic team of Victoria Davis ’21 and Javi Kumar ’21 led RE's upper school qualifiers, who competed successfully in a series of online events in April.
The sixth-grade Jelke advanced to the September middle school national history bee championships along with fellow RE middle schoolers Lucas Gonzalez '27, Tyler Marcus '26, Chase Dubovy '25, Max Salomon '25 and Danny Mendelson '25. Faculty member Joe Mauro coached the middle school contingent.
 
RE"s upper school JV team of Leo Fein ’23, Isabel Chong ’24 and Daniel Figueroa ’24 qualified for the May high school national history bowl championships along with Davis and Kumar under the direction of faculty member Branly Fontaine. The upper school students competed in a “Spring League” series designed to replace the traditional in-person events. Fein, Chong and Figueroa won the JV bracket of the Spring League History Bowl on April 17 as the varsity pair advanced to the quarterfinals. 

At the Spring League International Geography Bee on April 10, Fein finished fourth and Figueroa fifth out of a field of 31 JV competitors, and Kumar finished 11th overall in the varsity competition. In the Spring League World History Bee three days later, Fein finished sixth, and Figueroa, 10th out of 64 players. At the U.S. history bee on April 14, Kumar finished sixth and Figueroa, ninth.
