MS winter band concert showcases students' progress

Ransom Everglades' middle school band concerts are always part-performance and part-primer as director Cathi Leibinger showcases her students while also helping parents understand their child's musical development. At the Winter Holiday Concert at Swenson Hall on Dec. 6, students performed holiday classics and parents participated, using a "jingle" app on their phones to accompany "Jingle Bells" and following a rhythmic pattern (the clave) to clap along with "Feliz Navidad."

The concert opened with the RE Raider Band, which performed "Carol of the Bells," a famous Ukrainian carol played in honor of the war-torn nation, then "Hanukkah Holiday" and "Feliz Navidad." That was followed by the four-person RE Percussion Ensemble – Israel Garcia '28, Aly Kaplan '28, Lucas Noblet '28 and Isaac Zide '28 – which performed two pieces and then donned elf hats, sat at the edge of the stage with Leibinger and played "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" on melodicas.

Leibinger then guided the RE Beginning Band through a "score order" performance tour of the various instrument families, beginning with the flute and clarinet and concluding with the euphonium and tuba. The young musicians also performed "Ode to Joy." For the concert finale, all of the band students assembled on stage for a combined performance of "Holiday Rock."
