'House' tradition at RE continues in 2023-24
Ransom Everglades' newest tradition – "houses" a la Harry Potter – continues to evolve and thrive on both campuses. A jubilant House REveal at the middle school invited each incoming student into one of seven "houses" that serve as campus centers for spirit, fun and camaraderie. Meanwhile, upper school student leaders announced a redesign of the upper school house system modeled on traditions of the Ransom School and Everglades School for Girls.
On Aug. 23, student members of each middle school house – Adirondack, Banyan, Echo, Excelon, Hickory, Meenahga and Winslow – welcomed new sixth graders with banners and cheers during an exuberant ceremony on the Stamps Family Field. During the first upper school assembly Aug. 29, Student Government Association President James Brown-Urmeneta '24 announced that the upper school house system would shrink from 14 houses to just two, modeled on the Green and White teams from the Ransom School and the Egret and Ibis teams from the Everglades School for Girls.
The upper school's new houses: Blue Ibis and Green Egret. The first house competition: a toiletries and hygiene products drive Sept. 5-8 in partnership with RE alumni and benefitting Joshua's Heart, the non-profit founded by Joshua Williams '18.
"We want to create school spirit ... and we also see an opportunity for leadership and mentorship," Brown-Urmeneta said.

Founded in 1903, Ransom Everglades School is a coeducational, college preparatory day school for grades 6 - 12 located on two campuses in Coconut Grove, Florida.
