Crew team produces top finishes at national regatta

Six Ransom Everglades rowing teams finished with top-five times in their events, and more than a dozen raced to top-10 performances at the 2017 Sarasota Invitational Regatta Feb. 25, a sixth-annual event that attracted more than 74 clubs and 1,640 rowers from as far afield as California.
The event took place at Nathan Benderson park, site of the 2017 World Rowing Championships. Thirty-eight RE student-athletes participated in about two dozen races. This early-season regatta does not match the competitors in final events; rather, it awards medals for each "flight" or race of up to eight boats. 

Ransom Everglades crew raced in almost all event classes. The athletes won three gold, three silver and nine bronze medals and also earned three fourth places, two fifths and one sixth.

"The coaching staff is proud of the effort of our athletes and is planning for continued and improved success for the next regatta at the Miami International Regatta," Head Coach Frankie Viacava said.

Among the most notable results:

In the boys' high school quad, Andres Segrera '19, Chris Carlos '17, Gabe Echarte '18 and Omry Alfi '17 finished fourth overall and won a silver medal in their heat; Artem Zalivchiy, Shovan Bhatia '18, Jordan Mishael '17 and Will Mathes '19 got fifth and a bronze in their heat.

The girls' high school lightweight eight (Ines Pinella '18, Alana Miro '17, Gabriella Ouellette '18, Sophia Elliott '18, Eliza Kirk '19, Alexia Ouellette '19, Sonaja Lazovic '18, Ada Hevia '19 and Falyn Goldstein '18, cox) finished third overall claimed bronze in their heat.

The boys' high school junior varsity quad team of Andres Segrera '19, Chris Carlos '17, Gabe Echarte '18, Omry Alfi '17 and Baylar Ratzan '17 (cox) finished with the fastest time of the day in the event, first overall and landed a gold medal in their heat. It was the best finish for any RE team.

The girls' high school JV quad that included Maia Mora '19, Brianna Kerr '19, Danielle Gardere '19, Anna Mistele '19 and Falyn Goldstein '18 (cox) claimed the fifth-fastest time, and claimed a silver in their heat.

The novice boys' eight (Connor Sahs '20, Carter Freeland '19, Jackson Bryan '20, Asher Lieberman '20, Max Feinberg '21, Aston Craft '20, Julien Bacon '20 and Ilija Wan-Simm '19, cox) finished second overall, winning gold in their heat.

In other news, Tomas Pinilla '18 and Connor Sahs '20 posted the fastest time in the men's novice 2x at the Novice Regatta on Turkey Lake in Orlando Feb. 11 as all four RE novice crew teams entered brought home medals. Ilija Wan Simm '19, Carter Freeland '19, Asher Lieberman '20, Jackson Bryan '20 and Aston Craft '20 claimed second overall in the men's novice 4+ event.
 
Nearly 200 rowers and 21 clubs from across the state took part.

RE's men's novice 4x team (Pinilla, Bryan, Freeland, Sahs) scored first in its heat and fifth overall; the women's novice 4x team (Sarah Zanzuri '20, Julia Buckner '20, Isabella Ciocca '20, Ashley Nguyen '20) finished second in its heat and seventh overall; and the women's freshmen 2x team claimed third and 11th.

A novice event includes rowers that are in their first year of rowing in high school as of June 2016 regardless of grade, and previous rowing experience prior to entering high school. 

The teams at both events were led by Viacava and assistant coaches Lorenzo Diaz and Geronimo Fernandez.
