RE academic teams sweep SF History Bee titles

Lucas Miner '20 finished first in the varsity bee of the 2018 South Florida History Bee and Bowl at Archimedean School on Nov. 17 as Javier Kumar '22 topped the field in the junior varsity bee. Kumar also led his teammates to first place in the junior varsity bowl. Nearly 90 students representing 45 teams competed at the event, a qualifier for the National History Bee and Bowl and the international history olympiad.
Besides Kumar, RE's winning JV team included Victoria Davis '21 and Joseph Moskovitz '22. RE's varsity "A" team claimed fourth place in its division. That team included Miner, Howard Scharlin '20, Jake Quanstrom '20 and Justin Lopez '19.

Twenty RE students participated in the tournament that drew 59 varsity competitors and 29 junior varsity participants. Faculty members Branly Fontaine and Bruce Robbins coach RE's academic team. With their top finishes, Miner and Kumer qualified for both the national and international championships. Quanstrom and Tim Sucher '20 qualified for varsity nationals in the bee; and Davis and Moskovitz qualified for JV nationals.
