Double district champions in water polo

The boys' and girls' water polo teams proved a dominant duo in the Class 1A District 15 finals April 17 at the Ansin Aquatic Center, easily claiming back-to-back titles. The girls defeated Coral Gables by a 20-6 score to earn their 13th consecutive district title shortly before the boys beat Belen Jesuit, 15-6, to score their second in a row. Girls' Water Polo Photo Gallery Boys' Water Polo Photo Gallery
The girls put forth a clinic on team play with no fewer than 10 players tallying goals. Emmanuelle Dooreck-Aloni '20 scored four; Meredith Hutchinson '18 scored three; and Brooke Miller '18, Sara Mesa '20, Caro Carrera-Justiz '18, Ana Sannia '20, Grace Weibel '19, Ande Edmunds '18, Preston Edmunds '20 and Karin Belausteguigoitia '20 scored at least one each. Miller added six assists.

Matt Simko '18 led the boys with five goals and Jordan Gould '18 added three. Nico Valls '20, Jake Pearson '18 and Lucas Gomez '21 each scored a pair as Alex Freedline '20 chipped in one. Pearson also added seven steals. Both teams were led by coach Eric Lefebvre.

The boys' team advanced to the Florida High School Athletic Association state championship May 4-5 at RE, beginning with a state semifinal on May 4. The girls did not advance, falling to Hialeah High for the second straight season in the regional playoffs.
