Marine biologist and artist talks corals with upper school students

Ransom Everglades welcomed marine biologist, artist and filmmaker Colin Foord as a guest speaker on April 15 for an Earth Day assembly at the Lewis Family Auditorium organized by the Environmental Sustainability Council. A co-founder of Coral Morphologic, Foord has helped develop the world’s first multimedia coral aquaculture studio to bridge the gap between complex research and public awareness.
Introduced by ESC members Winston Hosford '27, Max Feldman '26 and Chloe Jimenez '26, Foord explained how he combines art and education to spread the word about corals – their resilience and importance. Calling Miami the "Coral City," he noted that corals are not just located far offshore but are actively thriving along Miami's urban shorelines and artificial reefs, particularly near the port.

"After I graduated, I realized a lot of people don't know what corals are, or why they are important," he said. "And sometimes science can go over a lot of people's heads, and to try to communicate to the public, creativity and art and multimedia can be a really powerful tool to educate people on why corals are important."

Foord, who co-founded Coral Morphologic in 2007, notes that Miami is at the forefront of both culture and climate change, and what humans are going to do to adapt. "We live," he said, "in a laboratory here."
