Alumni Highlight: Lauren Zimmerman '03

A partner at Selendy Gay law firm in New York City, alumna Lauren Zimmerman '03 has been recognized as one of the best and brightest litigators in the country by Benchmark Litigation and her pro bono work in and commitment to justice have also been recognized by the National LGBTQ+ Bar Association, which named her to its list of the 40 Best LGBTQ+ Lawyers Under 40.

LZ: 2003

RE: Where did you attend college?
LZ: Columbia University, New York City

RE: What was your major?
LZ: U.S. History

RE: What was your first ever job?
LZ: Working in my family’s bakery

RE: What is your favorite part of your job?
LZ: My colleagues

RE: What were your extracurricular activities while at RE?
LZ: Girls varsity basketball, tennis and golf teams, SADD, drama (school plays)

RE: Who was your favorite teacher at RE and why?
LZ: Michael Ferguson. He asked hard questions; forced students to really look at the past and present and think about where they stood in it all; and made it all fun in the process (loved his jokes).  

RE: What do you do in your spare time?
LZ: I run a social and professional networking club for queer women and gender diverse people who are over 30 and living and/or working in New York City. We host monthly events at different locations. In under a year and a half, it’s grown from 20 members to an almost 400-person membership.

RE: What motivates you to get out of bed in the morning?
LZ: The important need right now to support and get support from community.

RE: What is one of your favorite quotes?
LZ: “Truth and roses have thorns about them.” Henry David Thoreau

RE: What book are you currently reading?
LZ: Salt.

RE: What is something your teachers would be surprised to learn about you?
LZ: I enjoy drawing and sketching
