RE alumni medical professionals offer guidance to RE students

Ransom Everglades alumni in various medical fields – clinical care, enthrepreneurship and hospital leadership – shared their expertise with RE students during a multi-faceted career workshop on Sept. 9. Rheumatologist Elana Oberstein-Harris '93, physician Heidi Mason '96 and healthcare technology CEO Gonzalo Diaz '99 were joined by hospital director Yvonne Johnson-Phillips to help students understand what the future holds for the healthcare industry and how leadership, innovation, and compassion are shaping that future.
After introductions, the medical professionals met in classrooms with students and guided them through case studies drawn directly from their careers. The sessions were designed to expand students’ understanding how science, ethics, policy and patient needs intersect in real-world medicine.

REady: A REASON Career Workshop on Medicine and Healthcare was organized by the student club Miami Venturing Entrepreneurs – MVE president Eduardo de Sabrit '26 and vice president Olivia Michelsen '26 along with RE faculty/club advisors Brandon King and Maggie Berry.

The student club secured the impressive cohort of medical professionals: Dr. Johnson-Phillips is Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Baptist Health’s South Miami Hospital, and also the first African American woman to be President of the Orange Bowl Committee. Dr. Mason has frequently shared her expertise with RE students and offers concierge medical services at her private practice, Miami Comprehensive Medical Group. Dr. Oberstein-Harris was the 2017 RE Head of School's Alumni Award winner and is a former vice chair of the Ransom Everglades Board of Trustees. Diaz is founder and CEO of Centella, a healthcare technology company.
