RE sailing earns third place in the nation

For the first time in Ransom Everglades history, the RE sailing team finished on the podium at the 2025 Mallory national championship – the Interscholastic Sailing Association Fleet Nationals. After two days of racing, 20 races and challenging conditions, Griggs Diemar '25, Elisa de Becker '28, Tommy Zaydon '28, Sebastian van de Kreeke '25, Sofia Rhone-Fernandez '26, Ava McAliley '26 and Leyla Amjad '26 finished third, securing the bronze medal in a close competition on the Thames River at Connecticut College.
"Third in the nation – It has a nice ring to it," said assistant coach Nikole Barnes. "We were shooting for a higher spot but the sailors truly left it all out there on the water. There is nothing but pride today for our RE sailing team as we head back home to Miami."

Point Loma High in San Diego finished first and Antilles School in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, nabbed second place at the June 1 regatta. RE sailors train under Barnes and David Bargehr, RE's Director of Sailing and varsity head coach. Madelyn Quirke-Shattuck leads the middle school program and attended the national championships.

On day one of the competition May 31, sailors pushed through high breeze cold conditions and rain and, on day two, they were met with light and shifty breezes. In the A division, Diemar and crews de Becker and Zaydon dominated. Noted de Becker, a ninth grader: “It feels great and it’s really exciting to compete against other schools at such a high level. Starting as a freshman was also a great opportunity to learn from the more experienced upperclassmen.”

In the B Division, van de Kreeke with crew Rhone-Fernandez, and McAliley with crew Amjad finished seventh to help secure the bronze. Said van de Kreeke, the team captain who last fall finished fourth at the Cressy Single Handed National Championship in St. Petersburg, Fla.: "Ransom Everglades is – and will always be – a national championship-level program.” On shore, RE relied on the excellence of pit crew members Amelia Lazarus '25 and Manolo Campos '25

"We want to thank our whole team of sailors who got us to this point," Barnes said. "We truly would not have gotten here without you; this is your award as well. To the parents who stood by cheered and supported … we wouldn’t be here without your love and support. Lastly to Ransom Everglades … we are proud of the legacy we have established here this weekend… this is just the beginning. Thank you RE for supporting our team and helping us achieve this incredible result!"
