Model UN team travels to The Hague for international conference

A 19-student delegation from Ransom Everglades enjoyed a cultural immersion and intellectual adventure at the 58th annual The Hague International Model United Nations conference January 26-30 in Netherlands. The RE Model UN team joined over 3,000 peers from across the globe to address international challenges under the theme "Culture & Heritage: Embracing Diversity."
Before the committee sessions commenced at the World Forum, the students traveled to Amsterdam to visit the Anne Frank House, the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. A canal cruise through the city's historic waterways allowed the group to reflect on the conference’s focus on how history and heritage shape modern identity and international cooperation.

Representing the interests of Spain and the Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO), RE delegates engaged in rigorous debate, coalition-building and the drafting of resolutions – and won several legislative victories:

  • Luca Akin ’27 (Spain) led a resolution addressing maritime security and the protection of shipping in the Red Sea.
  • Oscar Vazquez ’26 (Spain) successfully navigated a resolution concerning the impact of protectionist policies on international trade.
  • Ana Gonzalez ’26 (Spain) served as the main submitter for a resolution regarding the legal status of returning Jihadists and their families.
  • Thomas Karam-Silva ’27 and Zachary Corbin-Cheah ’27 (Spain) collaborated on a resolution to promote sustainable consumption and reduce global food waste.
  • Pierce Harris ’26 (Spain) passed a resolution on UN peacekeeping operations and the protection of cultural heritage sites.
  • Sydney Schimel ’26 (FAO) championed a resolution aimed at ensuring free primary and secondary schooling for all children by 2030.
Stephen Allen, the RE Model UN Club advisor, accompanied the students along with RE Testing Coordinator Umehani Hassan. The formal conference opened with addresses from global leaders, including UNESCO’s Dr. Nigel Crawhall, who emphasized the value of indigenous knowledge, and Mayor Jan van Zanen, who highlighted The Hague’s history as a hub for youth diplomacy.

RE delegation members: Ana Gonzalez ’26 (President & Ambassador), Clemen Gonzalez Bergoderi ’27 (Secretary), Luca Akin ’27, Oscar Vazquez ’26, Pierce Harris ’26, Alex Dambournet ’27, Mateo Perla ’26, Ava Nunez ’28, Pedro Jereissati ’26, Vanessa Balson ’26, Lina Febres ’26, Zachary Corbin-Cheah ’27, Thomas Karam-Silva ’27, Nina Cooper ’28, Selin Kaleli ’28, Santi Gil Rivero ’26 (Ambassador), Sydney Schimel ’26, Charlie Reizenstein ’26 and Diego Stebelski de Alba ’26.
