RE students excel at regional science fair

Nelson Manstein ‘26 and Connor Alfonso ‘26 so impressed the judges at the 72nd South Florida Regional Science and Engineering Fair 2026 with their project to safely disinfect drinking water in developing countries that they received the Ricoh Sustainable Development Award, which recognizes projects that offer innovative and practical solutions for environmental sustainability.
The students, who were mentored by RE science teacher Yuria Sharp, presented their optimized 440-nm LED light setup for enhanced antimicrobial efficacy at the fair at Miami Dade College North Campus on February 7. Their project also qualified for the 2026 Florida State Science and Engineering Fair in Lakeland in March.

Also advancing were projects by Daniel Li '28, who presented his research on a new neural network capable of reconstructing tropical cyclone wind fields more accurately and efficiently from limited data, and Trevor Thomas '29, who presented his work on training deep learning models on multimodal neuroimaging data to improve Mild Cognitive Impairment classification performance in Alzheimer’s Disease.
