RE celebrates student-athletes' commitments to colleges

Six Ransom Everglades honored six student-athletes who will continue their sports in college with a ceremonial signing celebration on February 11 in the Anderson gymnasium. Edwin Carr ’26 is heading to Pomona College to play football; Torin Davis ’26 to Williams College for crew; Johanna James ’26 to Amherst College to play soccer; Carlos Lavernia ’26 to Johns Hopkins University to play football; Ava McAliley ’26 to Stanford University to sail; and Max Wolfensberger ’26 to Harvard University to sail.
“It’s a celebration of dedication, perseverance and the countless hours of hard work that these six student-athletes have poured into their craft,” Upper School Athletic Director Scott Berman said. “College opportunities like these are not given, they are built.”

The football team’s captain and 2025 Most Valuable Player, Carr was also a Miami Herald All-Dade Honorable Mention selection. He was lauded as a selfless player and quiet leader by varsity football assistant coach Edward Lally. Lally described Lavernia – who handled kicking, punting and kickoff duties – as a pleasure to coach, watch grow and battle back from a broken foot. James, who earned Miami Herald All-Dade First Team recognition as a junior and helped RE girls’ soccer to the first state semifinals appearance ever, was lauded for her speed, discipline, intelligence and leadership in remarks shared by Teo Delia.

McAliley, who helped RE finish third at the 2025 fleet racing national championship, displayed excellence, eagerness to improve and a drive to succeed, sailing coach Dave Bargehr said. Bargehr addressed Wolfensberger by his nickname – Super Max – noting that the sailor who finished fourth in the 2025 C420 Junior Olympics would not be forgotten at RE. Davis’ coach at the Miami Rowing Club described him as a strong communicator and organized athlete with exceptional drive and dedication.

We are proud of you not just for where you are going, but for how you got there,” Berman said. “Your journey is just beginning and we cannot wait to see how you impact your sport, your school, the classroom and the world.”
