RE students and faculty offer classroom experiences to pediatric cancer patients

Ransom Everglades students and faculty provided a three-day academic immersion program January 23-25 for 23 pediatric cancer patients treated at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital who are unable to attend in-person school. About 30 student volunteers organized by the Volunteer Service Organization and eight RE teachers provided classroom experiences designed to reintegrate the campus visitors into a traditional classroom environment.
The visiting children enjoyed hands-on learning experiences in STEM, humanities and art throughout the weekend program, known as REdiscover. RE faculty/administrators who participated were Miranda Klees (Biology), Yuria Sharp (Chemistry), Jorge Guzman (Ceramics), Cecilia Gonzalez (Drama), Karen Key (Math), Bob DuBard (Engineering), J.P. Arrastia (English), and Donald Cramp (Environmental Science).

The event took place in partnership with Camp U.O.T.S., a non-profit that provides summer camp experiences for students with cancer and blood disorders. Camp U.O.T.S. was founded in 1991 through the support of the United Order of True Sisters, a national philanthropy focused on cancer research and patient support.
