RE Model UN students participate in local, national conferences
Ransom Everglades' upper school Model United Nations club participated in two major conferences in March: the National High School Model United Nations (NHSMUN) Conference in New York City and the Miami Model United Nations (MIAMUN) Conference at Palmer Trinity School. At both events, RE's delegates networked with students from several countries to craft solutions to significant global issues through dialogue, consensus building and simulated diplomacy. In New York, the student travelers also enjoyed a cultural immersion, touring the Metropolitan Museum of Art and United Nations Headquarters and, in Miami, four students won conference recognitions.
With more than 3,000 student delegates from schools from across the world in New York from March 18-21, RE students represented two Caribbean countries to the OAS, UNESCO, World Trade Organization, United Nations Environment Assembly and several other committees. They lobbied proposals on topics ranging from AI to the Pact for the Future, and covering sustainable development, peace, security and the Global Digital Compact. The goal: to arrive at mutually agreed resolutions representative of common will and values of the global community.
In Miami on March 7-8, RE's 11 delegates represented several organizations from the Security Council, European Union, General Assembly to the International Criminal Court. RE delegates lobbied proposals on a number of topics: UN peacekeeping operations in a changing global landscape, state-sponsored terrorism, the security situation in Sudan and the 2025 joint crisis in Cambodia and Thailand. Jeremy Balson '28 received an award for Most Clauses Submitted in the European Union; Olivia Barrack '29 received the Most Amendments award in the European Union; Georgia Bush '29 received a commendation (though awards were not formally issued in her room); and Evan Powe '29 received a commendation for Outstanding Leadership in the Joint Crisis Committee.
RE MUN team members networked and demonstrated their professionalism and willingness to be ambassadors for RE with every step and interaction. New York travelers were accompanied by Model UN Club advisor Stephen Allen and RE faculty member Laurie Miller; Miami delegates attended with RE faculty member Lane Hunt.
