Students explore places and texts during Literary England Trip
Thirteen RE juniors and seniors enjoyed an extraordinary Literary England Trip across London, Bath, Stratford-upon-Avon and Oxford during spring break under the direction of faculty members Matthew Helmers and Julia Clarke. Experiencing England through both its rich history and its vibrant present, students encountered the places and texts that shape so much of the literature they study.
In London, students visited Westminster Abbey’s Poets’ Corner, explored the British Library and British Museum, and attended a performance of The Tempest at Shakespeare’s Globe: an unforgettable opportunity to see Shakespeare performed in a space modeled after the original Elizabethan theatre.
In Bath, students toured the Roman Baths and enjoyed time exploring the city’s bookstores, vintage shops and historic streets, experiencing daily life in one of England’s most beautiful cities. In Stratford-upon-Avon, students visited Shakespeare’s Birthplace and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, gaining insight into Shakespeare’s early life and world. In Oxford, they explored Christ Church College, toured the Bodleian Library and learned about literary figures such as J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and Lewis Carroll.
Throughout the week, students demonstrated curiosity, independence and kindness toward one another. They navigated new cities, engaged thoughtfully with historical and literary sites, and embraced opportunities to explore while experiencing both the historical depth and modern culture of England.
"It was truly an incredible week, and we are so proud of the way our students represented the school and embraced the adventure of learning through travel," Dr. Helmers said. "We look forward to next year's trip."
